Before:

This is our old couch that has been put to rest. It was a sectional but the other half was removed before I could take a picture of it.
It was actually the prospect of getting a new couch that started this whole project. We wanted to buy some cool movie theater-style recliners but then we thought, "Why put pretty recliners in an ugly room?" So I was given the task of designing our new living room.

One of two unused windows in this room. The other is behind the tv. Also take note of the hideous old carpet.

Mom's curio cabinet and her collectibles. They now reside in another room.

After!

We painted the walls dark grey, the ceiling black, and repainted the trim white. We also removed the ceiling fan and installed a star ceiling (it twinkles!). Four sets of track lighting were installed to highlight the posters, tv, and astronaut. Also, the beige carpet was replaced with a medium grey carpet and a black shag rug was placed in front of the recliners. When the lights are dimmed, the cupholders on the recliners glow bright blue.
To cover up the two unused windows, we hung black velvet drapes from the ceiling to the floor.
The posters behind the recliners are from Star Wars (from left to right): A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

Posters: War of the Worlds and Mars Attacks. Our male mannequin is wearing a retro '50s style space suit and is holding a toy ray gun that I bought at the Dollar Tree.

This is Buzz, our astronaut, who is standing in front of a light-up moon.

An Alien poster, along with Darth Vader and Han Solo street signs. We bought the Star Wars street signs back in 2005 so thankfully we already had them on hand.

Our 65" widescreen tv (please excuse the reflection). We may hide the dvd, Wii, audio receiver, and everything else that's sitting on the tv in a cabinet someday. But as of now, we don't mind where they're at.

And finally, the view from our door window. Wow, we're really close to Saturn.

Note: the black table you see in the video was painted and decorated to look like a control panel. That was mom's handiwork.
We're so happy with the way our room turned out, whenever we watch a movie (which is practically every day), we can't help but comment on how pretty and spacey the room looks. The star ceiling is so awesome to sit under and the recliners are extremely comfortable and plush. I definitely think it's an upgrade! ;)

In regards to the star ceiling, you can either purchase one already made as we did or if you're very techno savvy, you can build one yourself. Building one yourself is much much cheaper but looks rather difficult to me. I believe somebody has a video of a DYI star ceiling project on YouTube, so if you're interested, you might want to do a search for it.
