We recently turned our boring old living room into a sci-fi themed home theater. I'm pretty proud of how it turned out so I thought I'd share. ;)

Before:

This is our old couch that has been put to rest. It was a sectional but the other half was removed before I could take a picture of it.

It was actually the prospect of getting a new couch that started this whole project. We wanted to buy some cool movie theater-style recliners but then we thought, "Why put pretty recliners in an ugly room?" So I was given the task of designing our new living room.

One of two unused windows in this room. The other is behind the tv. Also take note of the hideous old carpet.

Mom's curio cabinet and her collectibles. They now reside in another room.

After!

We painted the walls dark grey, the ceiling black, and repainted the trim white. We also removed the ceiling fan and installed a star ceiling (it twinkles!). Four sets of track lighting were installed to highlight the posters, tv, and astronaut. Also, the beige carpet was replaced with a medium grey carpet and a black shag rug was placed in front of the recliners. When the lights are dimmed, the cupholders on the recliners glow bright blue.

To cover up the two unused windows, we hung black velvet drapes from the ceiling to the floor.

The posters behind the recliners are from Star Wars (from left to right): A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

Posters: War of the Worlds and Mars Attacks. Our male mannequin is wearing a retro '50s style space suit and is holding a toy ray gun that I bought at the Dollar Tree.

This is Buzz, our astronaut, who is standing in front of a light-up moon.

An Alien poster, along with Darth Vader and Han Solo street signs. We bought the Star Wars street signs back in 2005 so thankfully we already had them on hand.

Our 65" widescreen tv (please excuse the reflection). We may hide the dvd, Wii, audio receiver, and everything else that's sitting on the tv in a cabinet someday. But as of now, we don't mind where they're at.

And finally, the view from our door window. Wow, we're really close to Saturn.

Note: the black table you see in the video was painted and decorated to look like a control panel. That was mom's handiwork.

We're so happy with the way our room turned out, whenever we watch a movie (which is practically every day), we can't help but comment on how pretty and spacey the room looks. The star ceiling is so awesome to sit under and the recliners are extremely comfortable and plush. I definitely think it's an upgrade! ;)

Thanks! I was worried it wasn't saucy enough to post, haha.

all I can say is that I exclaimed, "DUDE!" when I got to the after. absolutely amazing.

I wish I had a space room!

This is really really nice and saucy. Amazing job!

that music on the video is hilarious. love it.

haha yeah I thought it would be a nice touch. It's from the Mars Attacks! soundtrack.

This is so unbelievably badass!

I'm way jealous.

Absolutely awesome!

thats awesome! great job!

that's really cool!

awesome job : )

this totally rules! very creative!

I could never, ever have pulled that off, but you did an AMAZING job! I am totally sold on the whole concept and the room rocks!

Great job!

You win the internet. Congratulations.

What are you screening tonight?

What time should we all be over there? :)

We are currently screening season three of Doctor Who.

Showtime begins at 7 p.m. CST every night.

THIS. IS. NOTHING. SHORT. OF. AMAZING.

I love everything about it! Especially the twinkle stars and astronaut XD

That is incredible!! I'd love to learn more about the star ceiling (was it DIY, a kit, something from Brookstone?). It just all looks fantastic, from your spaceman to the control panel table, the black velvet curtains, everything- how do you managed to pull yourself out of there? ;)

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you!

In regards to the star ceiling, you can either purchase one already made as we did or if you're very techno savvy, you can build one yourself. Building one yourself is much much cheaper but looks rather difficult to me. I believe somebody has a video of a DYI star ceiling project on YouTube, so if you're interested, you might want to do a search for it.

woooow.
I would kill to have something like this!

awesome! I love the new ceiling!I want to come watch the x-files in your house!! :)

this might be the coolest thing i've seen in this community

I love the star ceiling, the light up cupholders (!!!!!), the Mars Attacks poster. Those recliners it looks like you're gonna blast off into space. I would be freaked out though if I walked through there in the middle of the night and accidently bumped into Buzz, hahah.

Nice. My husband would be in complete heaven in that room.

this is so fantastic, i love it!

omgggggg so badass! love it love it love it.

You're awesome just for having a Killer Clowns From Outerspace icon

I don't think I've ever wanted to own a room in this community more than this one. Amazing.
