I recently checked out Earth-Sheltered Houses by Rob Roy from the library (he built his own underground home for around $20,000!), and I'm loving how well energy efficient these homes are. Since we're contemplating about building one of our own, I thought I'd share some of my inspiration photos with you guys! There's also this article, for anyone who would like to learn more about these dwellings.

If I suddenly was gifted one, I'd have a real problem finding a way to hang my art collection - not so good with curved or glass walls!
Gorgeous though, and perfect for just the right person.

Also, earthship building techniques are all well and good, but you might want to consider a hell of a lot more water proofing than they usually specify.
Roger Dean (the fantasy artist) has done a wonderful collection of conceptual drawings for underground living. Might be worth looking him up!
(If it's not obvious, your boyfriend isn't the only one who dreams of hobbit holes!)

Also, large concrete piles make excellent corridors, and if you put a flat floor down, you can pass plumbing and electrical conduits through them.

I never really thought much about it because I'm all about windows for natural light but the 2nd (and 3rd?) houses shown in your post are delightful. Really hoping the "hobbit" part and the big rooms in the latter pictures are all the same house cause I want that!
I just put that book on hold at the library along with his Mortgage Free! book which hopefully gives a lot of hints how to afford to build it without taking out massive construction loans :)

i'd like to be able to just live a life like that, without all that clutter and unneccessary stuff, and i try to live as minimalistic as possible, but there are things of sentimental value that i just need around me. only maybe about 2 boxes full, all in all, but still..
though i do happen to know some people who live in wagonplaces, and even though it's not underground living, it appeals to me quite a lot. nature and community all around.
hundertwasser also lived in an underground house most of his life. not fancy and stylish, but more down to earth, kind of organic living. i love it.
