Basement Apartment Living Room

Long story short: We are two Californians who moved to a basement apartment in Seattle, and were silly enough to be surprised when we realized our apartment got less sunlight.

Working within a side-of-the-road-or-Goodwill budget, we decided to not fight the darkness and go for something a little more dramatic rather than trying to inject lightness and airiness where there's none. It's very cozy, and a great place to sit with a cat on your lap and a glass of hot chocolate in the dark northwestern evenings.

bike

First, here's a single before picture just to give you a taste of what we were working with. White walls? Check. Dorm carpet? Check. Huge circuit breaker box? Check. Only light in room comes from ugly inset light? Check. Tiny window of unfinished wood that for some reason the previous tenant painted white and fuchsia on the inside where it is hardest to sand? Check.

lampcorner

The lithograph above the couch is by a friend of my partner. Before anyone tells me to hang it lower, at eye level, let me reveal that our basement ceilings are 6'8", and that it is at eye level.

guitars

This is also the music room. There are probably six or seven instruments in this room, five of which are plainly visible. Some are unusual. Can you find them all?

bigroom

This bamboo area rug is for us to play make believe that we have hardwoods.

derekschair

No sooner did I say "I was thinking we could give it sort of a Victorian feeling" than my partner said "I need to have this 70s rocking chair." Compromises were made.

windowsill

This window took way too long to refinish.

lampandmonsters

A lamp I made myself out of a nonfunctioning radio. For those wondering, yes, that is a Klein bottle next to it.

Teddy

I love the old-timey feel of a deer mounted on the wall, but we're both tree-hugging vegetarian animal lovers and just can't stomach it. So this recycled cardboard deer head was perfect. Also, finding this antique Teddy Roosevelt photo at the Goodwill basically shaped all future ideas for this room.

details

One last detail shot. The guy in the lower right corner is from the art behind the two tall candles, which are actually costume designs for a production of Three Penny Opera.

panarama2

A panorama, because I like to see how a room is laid out, so maybe you do too.

Thanks for looking, and a huge thanks to my BFF [info]kaflurbaleen for her mad photography and panorama skills.

oh this is lovely! the lamp you made is especially great :)

look forward to seattle summers, where the sun just about never sets....

Very nice! I love that drawing above the couch, and the color of the walls.

I love those little creepy pictures in the oval frames! I wasn't expecting that from the far away shot.

I'm not the OP, but those are from Travis Louie: http://travislouie.com/.

OP: I love everything about this place!

Oh man I love it. This is how my dream apartment would be, f'reals. Except maybe with more light; for the copious amounts of house plants if not for me. Also kudos on being brave enough to paint the walls a darker [than white or yellow] shade! It looks awesome.

this is amazing. all of it! I am applauding you!

Wow... I never would have believed it could be done, but you did it! It's dark and low-ceilinged, but instead of seeming oppressive and depressing, it seems classy, cozy, and just the right kind of strange!

Thank you! What a nice comment. I think if I were a book that's the quote I'd want for my jacket, "just the right kind of strange."

Also, I love your icon. Full disclosure: Many Star Trek action figures were moved out of this room before the photo shoot.

This is so very different from what I have going on in my apartment, but I absolutely love it. It's so cozy-looking, with so many wonderful little bizarre touches. I'm totally jealous of your phrenology head. I've always wanted one of thodse.

Thanks! I always wanted a phrenology head too, and then I looked them up on ebay and found out they aren't actually that pricey.

Way to put me to shame... I live in a basement apartment and use it as an excuse for my lack of sauce. You have proven me wrong.

I use it as an excuse for all three other rooms in my apartment. :)

But seriously, I'd love to see what other people are doing with basements, so if you feel like posting, I'll be there with bells on.

oh dear, if that is all the window you've got... great job making it into warm and cozy home.

Low on windows, high on wall space for art. :)

The Klein bottle(!), the phrenology head, and the framed masked people are super super cool.

Thanks. The folks in the oval frames aren't masked, they're paintings. http://www.travislouie.com/

HOW did you make that lamp??

I love the deep rich green color on the walls and the tiny little love seat next to the chair. Any special story about that? :)

What's the story with the tiny love seat?

Parts of the story not pictured: Me buying the love seat at the goodwill, me having to douse it in catnip to get her to sit on it long enough for a picture, me laughing hysterically, her walking off and instead sitting in the middle of the human couch where she takes up the most space.

Greetings, fellow Seattleites! I really love your aesthetic and your witty take on traditional decor. This is a damn cozy den and I can see holing up here starting in November and not coming out until March.

My ferret Kaylee (aka Princess Bunnytoes) demands that you hand over that tiny chaise longue immediately. Hey, I'm just the messenger.

I love it! I especially love the mix of 70s (chair) and Victorian!

Thanks, good to hear an outside opinion on it. It looks like it goes surprisingly well to me, but I can never be sure if I've just been staring at it too long.

I like the bamboo rug and the little window with books on the sill and the mini couch and the cardboard deer. :)

You did a great job. I really love it.

love it! btw, do you play that saw? one of my friends does, the sound is simply haunting sometimes!

My boyfriend is really the musician. He plays the saw, guitars, keyboard, harmonica, and the harmonium (it's a standing accordion masquerading as a table in this room). But yes, it's a surprisingly lovely sound.

(Big fan of your room btw)

My husband would be drooling over this and my dog would really like that little chaise.

Your place is Fucking Awesome. It's mostly the TDR. He just kind of brings everything together and .. well, he frowns upon it, but it's sort of a frown of approval.

Funny you say that, because Teddy is the driving force behind this whole space. He's actually frowning at a map of bigfoot sightings of the Pacific Northwest covering the breaker box on the opposite wall. Teddy is the only U.S. President that has ever written about seeing a sasquatch. True fact.

I am blown away by how awesome this is. Amazing work!!

oh, i really love that green you picked (my bedroom is a similar color). the lighting gives it somewhat of a gothic feel, but without feeling dark or creepy. you have done a fabulous job.

of course this entry makes me want to listen to basement apartment by sarah harmer...
i love that deer head and want to know where you got it from. such an amazing job.

You can google "Cardboard Moose Head" for several hits. Uncommon goods, modcloth, and http://www.cardboardsafari.com/shop/index.php? are just 3.
