I have two boys, ages 3.5 and 6.5. We live in a small one storey house, so the boys share a room. To save floor space, we have them in a bunk bed. My oldest actually fell over the railing on the top bunk, so we had to make some improvements on safety. Here is what we did.

We started off with this loft bed, the bottom twin bed is actually on a bedframe. Here was the initial set up and yes, my son actually rolled *over* that railing you see, and fell onto the floor.

we asked my oldest what he wanted, and he drew this:

So we made this, working off his design. The rocketship is painted on plywood, and it's bolted to the ceiling and to the frame of the loft bed.

Here's the front - we put a panel there with plexiglass as well.

The three year old finally decided on what he wanted on his part of the bed. So now we have this. Older brother helped paint the earth and clouds. the boys helped with the primer and the rocket ship. I did the stars.

Can you spot the three year old?

this is AWESOME. i bet you have two very happy children right now.

thanks! big hats off to my husband who came up with the design on how to get basically a box bed around our son's top bunk. :) and yes, my boys love it.

Amazing!! I love that they helped out too!

I don't think we could have gotten away with them not helping. :)

Love it! They look so pleased with it :)

they love it, and so does pretty much everyone else that comes over. :) this summer we're going to tackle building a tree house. (we were going to last summer, but I fell and tore my ACL and had to have surgery, so my husband was minus a helper)

That is absolutely amazing!

I like it. That's freaking sweet!!

My daughter has a loft bed, and only thing I don't like about it is trying to change the sheets. I have to get up on a step-ladder, or climb up into the bed to do it. And this design looks like it would only make that task harder. But what if you put hinges on the bottom of that upper rocket, so that it could flip down for service? What sort of hardware are you using to bolt that to the ceiling? I wonder if you even really need to bolt it to the ceiling... Hmmm...

I'm a mean mom, I make my son change the sheets. He strips the bed and does the inside corners, I do the outside ones and tuck everything in for him. it's not too bad.

it's heavy duty bolts, my son is a big mover in his sleep and we wanted it to be able to withstand a lot of bonks. we definately need to bolt it to the ceiling, we tried it without and it was just too flimsy for our comfort.

Oh, awesome. This looks so much fun! And the kids look so happy. That's the best part. :)

thanks! they do really love their rocketship bed.

This is awesome! I love that you used a standard bed bunk frame to make it work.

thanks! we had already bought the bed so we just had to figure out how to make it workable.

holy crap that is awesome!!

i can't believe your son fell over the railing of the top bunk - that must have given you a heart attack!

I KNOW! we had to take him to the ER because it was about a six foot drop. thankfully he was ok, but we couldnt' figure out how he rolled *over* that railing. thus, the box/spaceship bed idea was born.

That looks awesome. What a fun way to fix a safety issue.

That is amazing! I want one!

it's plywood and paint! :) you can make your own rocket bed. ;)

Eep! So great, esp. how he designed it himself!

yeah, they both had Very Firm Ideas on what they wanted it to look like.

You've gotta be the coolest mom. :)
I love that they get to draw their ideas.

thanks! my oldest is quite the budding artist, so he was super stoked to be able to 'design' his own rocket.

That is amazing. One day, eventually, I want to build a rocket ship bunk bed ... for my child of course. :-)

for your child, of course. :)

It's amazing!

And wow, I am glad your son is okay after that fall. Talk about heart-attack inducing.

there is nothing worse than hearing that "thump" then "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH". we knew what had happened, we just couldn't figure out how he managed to roll over the railing. anyway, there's no way he can fall out of this bed.

This is amazing!!! Way to run with your kids' creativity, and make it look saucy at the same time!

This is so cute. It looks like they love it too.

thanks! and yes, they love playing in their rocketship bed.

that's great going from his design to something workable!

yes, my oldest was very pleased with it. and thank you!

aww this looks so cool! My boyfriend now wants a bed like this XD.

haha! he (or you!) can build him one!

Damn, that's awesome! Snaps for you.
